...Reading a book about the life of Captain Sir Richard Burton...a fascinating fellow who spoke 20 languages and worked through the Mideast as a spy for Britain but also came to admire the people....in the introduction the author mentiones that starting in the 1830s or so the big deal, actually called the Great Game, was a battle between Britain and Russia for control of large parts of the MidEast...the Russians wanted to put a dent in Britains empire, especially to cost them India...and Afghanistan with an eye to Persia and the Ottoman lands as well...in this "war" missionaries played a great part...as did the pretext that one of other of these contending empires was intervening on behalf of native Christian populations...which they could only do if the missionaries went in, made some "converts", and then cried for help from their governments when their evangelizing became obnoxious. I am reminded of Dr. Joseph´s book where he says the same thing...as, for instance, even the New York Times blamed the missionaries for having set the stage for Badr Khans attack on Christian villages because he saw what the missionaries were up to and how gullible Assyrians were being bought and converted with money and promises of "protection". Missionaries are government agents. --------------------- |
