George Bush is a Right-Wing Zealot ...by Brian Reade Mirror.co.uk Our species' capacity for genius never fails to take my breath away. Ibm scientists have invented a computer which can do 1,000 trillion calculations in a second. Yet throughout this new millennium we have had, as the leader of the world's seven billion human beings, a man who takes 10 minutes every morning to make one decision - whether to go for the waffles or the flapjacks. George Walker Bush. So thick he couldn't spell his middle name correctly. And as he heads towards Britain on his Farewell Yurp tour, his spin doctors try to re-write his image, saying we should remember him as a visionary and a peacemaker. "I've been misunderstood as a guy who was really anxious for war," he told The Times. "I should have struck a different tone." Which is a bit like Harold Shipman telling the jury that if he had his time again, he'd have watched Cash In The Attic with the old dears before issuing the lethal injection. It is vital, not simply for the history books, that we do not get taken in by this false, folksy act. For eight years the world has been led by a dangerous fundamentalist (with the emphasis on the mentalist) who defined the enemy as any group who refused to buy into his dogma of extending America's economic and military might. And we could easily have met our Armageddon. This is not a time to sanitise the evil he unleashed but for an honest assessment of his legacy. Allow him to ride off into the sunset as a "regular kinda patriot" and we do future generations a disservice. Instead let's remember him as he was: A draft-dodger who sent thousands of troops to die in an unlawful war. A spoilt rich kid who slaughtered tens of thousands of innocents, all to settle scores for his dear old pop. A willing stooge for a clique of military hawks and businessmen who sought control of the earth's resources. A right-wing zealot who gave massive tax cuts to the rich, kept 45 million Americans without health cover and endorsed the rampant greed which caused a credit crunch and sparked a recession. The Texan bigot who promoted protectionism, withdrew from international treaties on the environment and chemical weapons, flattened sovereign states then handed the rebuilding contracts to his own billionaire buddies and backers. An evangelical fanatic who invented a "war on terror". A buffoon who pledged to turn the world upside-down after 9/11 in a Wild West pursuit of Osama bin Laden. And never found him. The man who believed his contribution to preserving human rights was opposing abortion while giving us Guantanamo Bay, extraordinary rendition, Abu Ghraib and easier access to guns. But don't listen to this bleeding heart limey. Listen to an American like Michael Moore, who for the past eight years has spoken for half of his own nation when it comes to Bush. This is how Moore wants the "misunderstood" president's reign to end: "I want him paraded in handcuffs outside a police house as a common criminal because I don't know if there's a greater crime than taking the world to war based on a lie for your corporate sponsors." Let that be his legacy. Remember him as a stooge for a clique of military hawks and businesses. --------------------- |
