After reading Michael Parenti's memoir, Waiting for Yesterday, about his early years growing up in East Harlem in a working class southern Italian family, with a father who was illiterate, and a mother who died when Parenti was 17, and also being an only child, I was incredibly moved learning how someone with that type of background (immigrant, poor, no siblings, no mother after 17, and being southern Italian) didn't become an associate to, or a member of, the local mafia gang. Instead, he finished his PhD in political science at Yale and led a precarious life of left-wing activism during the paranoid period of the Cold War. Another thing I found out about him is that he has a son, Christian Parenti, who's as sharp, fierce and engaging as his father. This is a half-hour program about Christian Parenti and his latest book, Tropic of Chaos.
