If you understand, truly understand, what a Black man or woman's experience growing up in America is, then you will feel compassion....that is, if you aren't dead to human empathy and fellow-feeling. If you don;t understand what it must be like, then why would you feel compassion? You'd merely tell them to forget the past, get over it, and start behaving white.
