Crucial Importance of Syrian/Assyrian

This is a most important point raised by Warda. Unfortunately he again omits any references…only giving us his own word for it. Since this is central to Dr Joseph’s claim of “Syrian” being first applied by the Greeks in place of Aramean and not, “the same word as Assyrian”, it’s disappointing that Warda didn’t see fit to trust us with the direct information…which he does on numerous, less significant, occasions.

“A new bilingual inscription in Hieroglyphic Luwian and Phoenician discovered in Turkey at Çineköy, in the vicinity of Adana by Recai Tekoglu and André Lemaire provides incontrovertible evidence that 'Surai' i.e, Syrian meant Assyrian to the Luwians the ally of the Assyrians long before Greeks used the term.”

If, as Warda claims, such an inscription was found before the Greeks are said to have used “Syrian” to mean Aramean…and if the inscription truly means “Assyrian”, then Dr Joseph and so many other sources, both ancient and modern, are incorrect when they say “Syrian” meant Aramean. This one inscription would settle the contention raised by the christo-nationalists that Syrian “always meant” Assyrian, so that all the years we called ourselves Suraye, we really DID mean and understand to be calling ourselves Ashuraye (Assyrian).

That’s the reason I wish Warda had given the reference, because it’s THAT important. I doubt he’d answer any such request from me but if anyone knows him, kindly ask him for his sources…and you’ll be doing all of us a favor.
