...just watched the Hitchens Galloway debate again...can't get enough of Galloway in this debate at least....it's also an amazing transformation from the Hitchens who cooly handles any number of priests and divines and nuns and bishops, never losing his cool, every hair in place, even out of place where it belongs...it's a mesmerizing performance and I have to admit that I was overly impressed just because I've been hungry to have a crack at it myself and it all seemed so daring, so bold just because it is so new...but, the Hitchens you see up against Galloway is almost unrecognizable...even his appearance betrays him...he is not "handsomely" unshaven but looks like Richard Nixon...he is shifty-eyed, assessing the crowd warily, which doesn't give him the honor he is used to and feels he deserves....he interrupts Galloway with trite observations and flat jokes, a couple of times in an effort to throw him off what he sees coming...it just isn't the same Hitchens...in fact he comes across as a nun or rattled priest himself....up against a Galloway who looks and speaks more like a Hitchens when faced with religious folk. And then it struck me...Look who Hitchens is usually up against...nuns, godly fools, pimply apologists....of COURSE he wipes the stage with them.....he's great because he's one of the first to take this fight on the road...to confront these people and their voodoo religions. I mean he's arguing against superstition and Bronze Age "ideas"......but against Galloway it's an entirely different matter and he treats the war in Iraq and Islam as a voodoo priest would...he can't make any headway against Galloway, who in this debate plays the part of Hitchens while Hitchens is a spluttering nun who even at one point wags his finger at the crowd and warns them they'll be sorry for applauding Galloway and that there are cameras FILMING it all...just like an elderly nun would when she finds boys masturbating. Against Galloway he's way out of his league...but he took himself out of that league when he became an apologist for Bush and neo-cons and the war in Iraq and against Islam...he did it to himself, and it shows in this debate.....he was a Sampson who gave himself a haircut. --------------------- |
