I attended a Christian Iraqi Protest on Sunday 22nd July. See: http://www.chibo.com.au/photos/Iraq%20Protest/ Sad to say it was quite embarrassing. Forget the fact that various Assyrian political leaders used the event to manipulate our people and legitimise their claims to further government funding what really was embarrassing was the way we paraded in a park away from public view. Lead by one guy holding a cross it appeared to be a futile "feel good" excercise designed to placate a restless minority group troubled by the news from their Iraqi homeland. I stood back and took photos as each speaker took to the podium and parroted the same cliches about how we are the "indigenousist peoples" and how "we're being Genocided" and how "we demands that the West give us a homeland with fries." It was not until their guest speaker Australian Senator Rod Kemp took to the podium that I thought it prudent to salvage a little dignity for us. After he had completed his speech and essentially patted our boys on the head and promised to give their letter to the Prime Minister he proceeded to walk through the crowd smugly shaking peoples' hands as though he had actually done something for them. As he approached me with one of his minders and shook my hand I knew I had to be quick and to the point. I shook his hand and after introducing myself said, "Senator if you must illegally invade sovereign nations in order to secure a free trade agreement for your corporate Liberal party sponsors and strategic oil control for your US ally, could you at the very least look after the widows and orphans that have resulted from your government's policy?" His face turned ashen and his smile evaporated he genuinely looked unsettled and shook his head trying to placate me as quickly as possible so that he could leave. His minder grabbed him and led him away as I continued to take more photos. --------------------- |
