...I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been so warned by a nervous clerk somewhere. I actually heard it a few times...while paying a phone bill in person...when returning a defective item....and a few other times when I was essentially trying to get some satisfaction for perceived and actual damages....the funny thing is that in none of those cases did I raise my voice...we never got to the point where I had REASON to shout....because the clerk always stopped well short of that point by telling me NOT to do what I wasn't doing anyway but, she thought, I MIGHT do if we proceeded any further...mostly because her scripted responses weren't getting rid of me or my complaint. This may be the reason the Patriot Act lumps any kind of protest with "terrorist activities", even if they add "of a low order", it starts the ball rolling against you....you are put on some kind of "watch list"...flagged for extra groping at the airport maybe. Before you can really shout, they cut you off by saying "don't shout"...so maybe you'll keep quiet? Like a good consumer of democracy. --------------------- |
