I always knew my grandfather was heavily involved in things Assyrian once upon a time...even to being involved with Dr Freydoun Atruaya and others in drafting the first political party way back in 1917. He also acted as doctor and fought alongside Agha Poutrous during that war. Later he barely saved his family escaping from Urmia from the righteous wrath of Muslims who were sick and tired of being betrayed by their own neighbors to the British and Russian and next American Christians.

But my grandfather was also a healer and a man of sound common sense. As one of the leaders of the refugees, he counseled against further nationalistic nonsense....he said the best we could do was protect our families and work for the future of our children...we had been welcomed into Iraq and should work hard to make it our country and grow with it.

Later, when the British came up with their sceme for creating a Colonial police force, the infamous Levies, to do their dirty work, he warned the Assyrians, many still in refugee camps, not to fall for the bait...that the British, according to us, had just betrayed us, so why should we trust them again...that Iraq had opened its borders to us and was eager for us to settle and put our talents to work to build, not to help foreigners destroy and control. But enough of them didn`t listen and believed the foolish promises of the British, or at least accepted their wages and uniforms and weapons to use against the very people who`d welcomed us...you can imagine what this kind of ingratitude meant to Muslims, who have great respect for the laws of hospitality, so much so that they are forbidden to wreak just revenge on an enemy who strays into their mercy but must shelter and feed and protect him.

And my grandfather was proven right when the Iraqi government, fed up with Assyrian nationalist bullshit retaliated against them all by selectively murdering 300 men and women and one or two children...in clear retaliation for the treachery as well as for the Muslims murdered by their "guests", the Assyrian Levies.

He learned his lesson and tried to teach it to others. Perhaps there had seemed a small window of opportunity when the Assyrians, so-called, MIGHT have found some advantage in the turmoil of that day...but that time quickly passed. The best our people could hope for was acceptance by Iraqi society and that acceptance was freely offered UNTIL our idiots did their usual thing, spoiling it for everyone else.

It`s good to know some Assyrians can learn, grow and change.
