It dawned on me the other day after seeing a Muslim. Work colleague who had trimmed his beautiful long beard in the form of a square cut. The guy looked like he had stepped out of a bas relief. Here was a descendant of Ashurbanipal having maintained even his fashion and all. Under the ancient Assyrians the long square beard was considered a mark of manhood and strength and was fashionable throughout the empire. Only eunuchs did not wear beards and were castrated specifically to ensure that they could guard the king's wives. Meanwhile harlots were forbidden to wear veils - hajjab - so that they could be differentiated from other women who wore the hajjab as a sign of modesty. The veil introduced during the 7th century BC under the Assyrians and the square cut beard are fashionable clothing that are still used by the descendants of the ancient Assyrians today. Those who have lost these ancient customs - including myself - would be considered eunuchs and harlots by our ancient ancestors were they alive today. --------------------- |
