As many books as I’ve read on this subject I still forget the sequence of events or why it had to involve all of Europe and drag America into it as well. An essay by George Bernard Shaw, who lived through it, states it clearly…A Serbian shot and killed the Austrian grand duke…Austria made threatening noises towards Serbia….Russia came in on the side of fellow Slavs…Germany was allied with Austria and knowing France was an ally of Russia, decided the best course was to attack and defeat France quickly, before the Russian Bear could mobilize…an attack on France brought in England, which was allied with France…and soon everyone was killing everyone. Mostly Christians. The Ottomans were already fighting off European aggression-in-search-for-oil before the European war broke out…indeed the Sultan was forced to make nice with Germany just to have a modern power on his side to face the English, French, Italian and, in the distance, the Americans…all of them eager to “liberate” the oil fields they’re still killing those people for. The Sultan never trusted the Germans but then neither did the French and English trust each other. --------------------- |
