I live close by the VA and when I step out onto the street, I see not only the same number of vets from the days before, but an added number of new vets from the recent wars. The Vietnam guys are mostly hooked on heroin and are predominantly African-American, whrereas with the Mid-East war vets, they're mostly white and strung-out on meth - and they are all disillusioned as vets and as American citizens. (As far as Latinos, their families take them in, and therefore, not many are dealt the cold realities which their white and black military brethren face.) Then there's the mentally challenged who (thanks to Reagan) got kicked out onto the pavement when most of the facilities for the them were shut down. And they're bunched together with the vets and the recently homeless as the cops march them down and away from the restaurants and shops where the opulant and the tourists go eating and shopping. The cops will not even allow the homeless to quickly dumpster-dive in the trash cans of the eateries and markets where food is thrown out daily. About a year ago, there was an article in the LA Times about how the elderly and poor who are in great need of medical aid are dumped out onto Skid Row and left there to die in the cold. This is only blocks away from the recently renovated downtown, where Angelinos praise our mayor for "fixing" the homeless problem. A problem caused by the shutting down of factories, the outsourcing of jobs and the shredding of what' left of the social safety net. So much for alturism and the American christian way. --------------------- |
