This must be the twentieth time I've watched their debate...it fascinates me. What really gets me is how poorly Hitchens comes off, even to twice warning people in the audience who are not cheering him that they are being televized and "your mommies will see".....what kind of a retort is that in a debate...and by THIS man of all men? He appears disheveled, sweaty, unsure...he cuts into Galloway's speech many times with silly observations and even finger-wagging, saying things like "did you notice that"...or "very interesting"...all of them cheap debating tricks you wouldn't use in high school.... Which only begs the question of why this man would find himself in a position where his undeniable skills at public speaking and sparkling debates and retorts are totally lacking....you almost don't recognize him or can believe it's the same guy artfully undressing philosophers and prelates and skilled orators. What happened to him...on THIS subject? I think the answer is what he accuses religious people of, and that is not REALLY believing what they profess to believe...as being too ridiculous to believe...and he usually leaves THEM looking a little like he looks at the hands of Galloway. I think what undoes Hitchens in this debate and on the subject of the Iraq war and Bush and America's "noble" mission or even "security interests" is that HE believes none of it...that's why he argues so poorly and is so easy for George to dismantle. In the are of religious faith, with no evidence to stand on, people can be made to look ridiculous...Hitchens does it to them all the time....and, likewise, on the question of his own FAITH in America as the rescuer of the downtrodden, Hitchens has little to no evidence and is left, like the religious, flailing and "faithing" all over the place, with little reason or logic. Hitchens can't really believe what he is saying, especially when we know his record of being PRO-Liberation struggles in the past....just like the religious he resorts to fantasy and wish-thinking even against all the concrete evidence of what US governments have done and are doing NOW. --------------------- |
