I’m not religious. I think every religion on earth was made by men, literally by men. The men had good intentions and knew people would accept their ideas more readily if they believed a divine power issued them. I have no idea where the universe came from, why we’re here or where we’re going…and I don’t care. To me spirituality is kindness and respect and the greatest hell I can think of is eternal life. Live a good life and then lie down and die in the arms of mother earth. I’m reading a book titled “Muhammad” written by Yahiya Emerick, an American Protestant who converted to Islam in 1989. Much in it is fascinating, especially this: “Islam, like Christianity and Judaism, accepted the existence of slavery. It also tried to regulate the practice and make it more humane. Before Islam, slavery in Arabia was practiced similarly to slavery in America: slaves were property to be used at will. Islam created many regulations that make slavery something of a burden on the owners. Only captured enemies can be enslaved, as punishment. Muslims must feed, shelter, and clothe a slave as they do themselves. They cannot overwork them, prevent them from marrying, or stop them from having outside work in their off time. A slave has the right to demand a contract of manumission whereby the slave may buy his or her freedom. If an owner slaps or hits a slave, Islamic law says the slave in automatically to be freed. Finally, the Quran declares that freeing a slave is a meritorious act that will earn the favor of God. Is it any wonder so many slaves in Mecca began converting to Islam?” This code was adopted in the 7th century…a thousand years later Christianity had nothing in its bible to offer Christian slavers that came even close. Who is a barbarian? I remember Kuwait in the early 50s where there were still slaves. Each sheikh’s son was given a newborn slave boy at birth. The two grew up together and if the young sheikh dared slap his slave, he would be slapped in return in the slave’s presence --------------------- |
