...I've been saying for years that the vote is useless....that it's a set-up blah blah...and that the only way to effect real change in America is by economic boycott...as in the case of the Montgomery Bus Boycott which ended one form of segregation simply because it cost money to keep buses segregated.....but there is another way...a way which doesn't require a majority vote to bring before the public and it's the way they got circumcision on the ballot in San Francisco...and that is through the Petition process. Why stop at forcing an actual democratic vote on circumcision? Or the Gay marriage ban? Citizens gathered voter signatures and voila!...the people got to vote, not through their bought-and-paid-for representatives but directly, as in ye olde Greece. Why not gather signatures for a measure that allows the people to vote for a $20 an hour minimum wage?...and Health Care? And other benefits at work? Hells bells these are measures that would WIN...and there isn't anything unconstitutional about them...providing decent wages people can actually live on doesn't violate the Constitution in any way so there would be no basis for legal challenges. The Right forces votes on Gay marriage and they win, barely. But that measure WILL fail on legal review... There is a simple path open to put issues directly before the voters, and any measure that promised to better the lives of workers and their families would win, even with ten Tea Parties. There is no Middle Class left to speak of...we are all the working poor. But we don't have to keep whining to politicians...we can take action directly...as if they don't exist. Because for us, they don't! --------------------- |
