heresy 1 a: adherence to a religious opinion contrary to church dogma b: denial of a revealed truth by a baptized member of the Roman Catholic Church c: an opinion or doctrine contrary to church dogma. 2 a: dissent or deviation from a dominant theory, opinion, or practice b: an opinion, doctrine, or practice contrary to the truth or to generally accepted beliefs or standards. Our people react to any doubt about our modern identity as if it was heresy. Skip the first definition above because it realtes only to church doctrine. In the second one we see secular heresy defined which is almost as violently opposed as the religious sort. To question anyone's core beliefs, whether religious or not, is to commit heresy, as far as they're concerned. And they react pretty much the same by turning on you with extrememe violence, verbal first and maybe physical later. It happned all through history; tell a cannibal that maybe there's a better way to satisfy hunger and you've just committed a heretical act...for which he might eat you. It's our core belief that we are descendants of the ancient Assyrians and also that being Christians makes us even more Assyrian. There's no evidence for this, other than our claims, but that only makes us believe it all the more desperately and fanatically. At all points in history the majority have been content with things they way they were...the way they were handed down and their deepest desire is to keep things that way and pass them on to their children for all time. That's necessary to a point, but we would hardly have progressed from where we were 10,000 years ago if we never questioned core values and beliefs....like women being politcally equal to men, Blacks being as human as anyone else...the world being round and not flat...or the sun being at the center of our galaxy and not the earth. Each of these and thousands of other points of view were regarded as revealed truths and to question them at all was considered a crime against humanity, truth, peace and "nature" too...plus the way "god intended it". Thankfully there were individuals willing to dynamite us out of static complacency and onto the next phase of human growth. I question that we are Assyrians in any meanignful sense of the word....and that's a heresy. But without heretical thinking we wouldn't have toilet paper today...so I rest my case. The nationalist argument and constitution and parliament and militia are all written on toilet paper...and are good for one thing and one only..and afterwards they should be flushed. I'd like to help flush them all away...so our people can actually join the human race and move on to a long-delayed development which will get us out of making the same mistakes over and over while insanely expecting a different outcome. It's tough...but it needs doing. --------------------- |
