...he was terribly offended over the cartoon controversy and no doubt would have gone even whiter at the Charley Hebdo incident....he rails against the notion of "taking offense" as a justification for acts of retaliatory violence....but what was the war on Iraq but "retaliatory violence"? ..it all comes down to what offends you, I guess...because although, as Hitchens admits, when he is offended by religion he doesn't go out and burn a church or kill a priest, he DOES support the bombing of Iraq and the murder of its innocent population largely, I think, because Islam "offends" HIM. Not what Muslims DO, because Iraq did nothing to us, but for what it IS...the same point of view which was turned against the Jews who DID nothing to Germany or Poland, except improve the quality of life there, but were murdered for what the WERE. Iraq, literally, did nothing to us...and would that we had left it alone...not for their sakes but for OURS. Remember, the people who suffered at least as much as the Jews from what Hitler did were his own "dear" German people. And now we are paying as great a price, not in lives lost certainly, and will go on doing so for the forseeable future. --------------------- |
