...just watched their debate again, from 2005 and was struck yet again by what a poor showing Hitchens makes when he's defending Bush and the war against Iraq...he has not that certainty and grace....he looks childish and pedantic and bombastic trying to cleverly use words and pauses and all the tricks of the trade which usually work so well for him...and you have to ask yourself if this is the same guy and why he makes such a poor showing on this topic when he's so keen and sharp and brilliant in his exposure of religion...and then it hit me, he's lying...and he's wrong, on Iraq and Islam, I mean. All his brilliance leaves him and reverts to cant, to long-winded tricks and dramatics...which Galloway easily deflates, each and every time. At one point, apparently exasperated and maybe bewildered by the audiences' lusty cheering of Galloway, something usually reserved for Hitchens when he lambastes Christianity...he sort of school-marmishly warns the audience that "you know you ARE being filmed"................" your mothers and father will see this film...." What the fuck.....? Is he trying to scold or scare the audience? Having shown their maturity by rejecting his jingoistic slobber does he decide to treat them as what they are obviously not: scared silly children who should be afraid of getting in trouble with mummy and daddy? Altogether a very poor showing by Hitchens...he should stick to what he knows best...he does much better there because he's being honest. Clearly Christianity is the bloody and violent religion...not Islam. --------------------- |
