....I've been going over and over the possible reasons a warrior emperor like Constantine might have had for adopting Christianity, of all religions. At the very time he was embroiled in a four-way battle for supremacy....war and murder and executions and theft and slavery were part of his everyday life and formed the entire basis of his empire....what on earth attracted him to a religion of "peace"? Did he think it would make bloodier and better soldiers? How far the distance between what the Roman way of life was and what Jesus was supposedly advocating...I mean what was the basis of the attraction?

Constantine says it was the vision he had of Jesus promising him victory if he fought under the cross...and maybe that's all it was...maybe the value in Christianity to Constantine was precisely its message of peace and brotherly love, of forgiveness etc., with the one addition I know the Romans made of rendering unto Caesar what was his, which was everything you would ever own.

But the cover, the propaganda value, of all this love and peace was exactly what the Roman army needed....they were no longer raping you and stealing your country because they wanted to, but because they came in love, to save your soul, and you, bastard that you are, refused....so YOU forced them to kill you.

It had to be something like that because otherwise it makes no sense that a Roman emperor would choose a religion so at odds with everything that made his empire possible and he stood for and really, actually, believed.
