...any kind. I accept the challenge of civilizing human beans, but I don't like it's being done through superstition or appeals to divine wrath, love or rewards. ...To say that people will not accept the simplest notions of common sense or what is needed for community health and well-being without being frightened or charmed into believing some God said "do it or else"..or "do it and see how much better you'll feel", is to justify giving them a good beating by way of teaching them to do the right thing..or promising them absurd rewards as the other way...it's true that you can control children through beatings and treats, but they can hardly develop their full mental and emotional capacities when treated in such barbaric ways. ...my four children were never subjected to a god of any kind...they weren't beaten or bribed either...instead I appealed to their reason and sense of justice and fair play, and while I admit it sometimes took longer and required repetition, in the long run it made for more secure and pleasant children to be around....children who inspired strangers to stop and compliment for their "mature" behavior...when all it was resulted from treating children with respect and consideration instead of scaring or appeasing them, and asking the same from them. In the same way it would be far better to teach people to do the right thing because it is the right thing to do and therefore the best in the long run. It isn't hard to demonstrate either....it just takes time and patience...whereas a blow or a threat or promise of a candy may work faster, it leaves the person infantile. Religion is also a test. If a child can be made to bend before it's monumental illogic, that child will grow into a human bean to whom logic and reason are enemies...or unknowns and therefore to be feared...an adult who will prefer kowtowing to some otherwordly policeman who will reward you if you do what he says and punish you if you don't...like an autocratic parent does...or King or President. The whole thing is disagreeable and stultifying. People say, "well, people need their faith or else they'll be lost"...yes, but that's like saying the person who had his legs cut off and was given crutches in place of them will fall if his crutches are removed. Sure...of course. But maybe if his legs hadn't been cut off to begin with he'd have no need of crutches and even be able to run farther and faster with his own sound legs than the crutches religion provides. Still, it's a personal thing and I certainly wouldn't interfere with anyone's religion unless....unless his religion teaches him that anyone without religion is an enemy to his God and therefore can be killed or oppressed...and that's just what Christianity has done and is doing now. Christianity did that to the Jews, culminating in the Holocaust, and it's doing it again to Muslims. In the case of Christianity we have a religion that excuses itself, even tells itself it's doing God's work, when it lies and uses lies to attack people of differing faiths who never did a thing to it...such as the Jews and Muslims. It's one thing to have wars and defend yourself, even to seek to increase your borders and wealth...this is clearly human nature and humans don't need to apologize for it...but the idea of killing people because of their religion is something entirely new to the modern world, especially since Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire...God then became an avenging angel of death. To survive on this planet, the only paradise we'll ever know we can know, we have to kill the notion of Heaven and all the pretty poetry that goes with it. Hopefully, just as we did away with so many superstitions from our hoary past, belief in gods telling us what is best will one day die out and our minds will finally be able to freely create the best possible way for all people to live in peace and security and prosperity. God has been an unmitigated disaster to the human race so far. Kill god before he kills you. --------------------- |
