...I would tell the assyrians in northern Iraq that they were welcome to live there, but only as citizens of Qurdistan (as long as it remains so), which is the exact same speech assyrians would make to Qurds if they controlled the region. I would say I expect them to be as loyal to Qurdistan as Qurds living there are expected to be...just as French people in America are expected to be loyal to America....I would tell them they could remain a distinct minority, they could call themselves assyrians, if they needed to, much like Irish-Americans celebrate their Irish ancestry and customs...I would tell them they could expect no special treatment as assyrians...that they could make no land-claims, or agitate politically because they think they are owed anything....they could teach their own language in churches and private schools and homes and their clubs and social gatherings would be respected so long as no sedition was preached or taught in them, as is forbidden in all countries, including the United States....I would tell them that no Qurd much gives a shit what they think they are owed, or who they are descended from, or if their grandfather was really Ashurbanipal, so long as they obeyed the laws of the land....and we would all get along fine and there would be no obstacles placed in their path etc. And, of course, that they could practice their religion all they wanted to, with the hope that after 2000 years they might get it right. And you know what? I'd be denounced as a traitor, a usurper, a hater of Christians and a denier of their ancestry....but I wouldn't care. --------------------- |
