...they'd still be writing Assyrian as 'Syrian'. That would be fine...because the French also write American differently than Americans do, and we know what they mean by their spelling....same with Luwians if they were here. We would know that was just a peculiarity of their language, it wouldn't turn Assyrians INTO Syrians.... BUT no assyrian would call hisself by what Luwians called him or her....they would still call themselves assyrians not 'Syrians'. Just as Americans today don't call themselves 'les Americaisns'.....or 'Americanski' or any other variant of that name. All this inscription tells us is that in the time of the Assyrians there was a Luwian people whose language rendred Assyrian into 'Syrian'....big deal. That was just THEIR thing...had nothing to do with what Assyrians called themselves. --------------------- |
