It’s interesting that as obscure as we were to Europe in the 18th century, they had managed to hear about us. It’s odd though, given the fact that all Europe, well versed in the bible, never mentioned us as what we claim we always knew we were, that is; as Assyrian descendants of the ancient Assyrians. I’m sure European historians and clergy would have been intrigued and thrilled to think of us as such. Instead they knew us only as what we were…and what we called ourselves.

Regarding Edward Gibbon’s masterful “The Rise and Fall of The Roman Empire”, in which there is much said about the early Church, Durant says;

“Volume IV included masterly chapters on Justinian and Belisarius, a chapter on Roman law which won high praise from jurists, and a dreary chapter on the further wars within Christian theology. ‘I wish’, wrote Walpole, ‘Mr Gibbon had never heard of Monophysites, Nestorians, or any such fools’”.

To which any sane man would say, “Amen”. It’s interesting to note that our people were known, at least to the educated, religious and historians…but never as Assyrians or Chaldeans. And it may well explain the ridiculous spectacle we make of ourselves that even back then we were engaged with and obsessed by trivial distinctions over how many fingers you use when pointing to heaven. It seems we have NEVER involved ourselves with anything greater than myth, voodoo, hobgoblins and this has rendered us hopelessly impotent when it comes to dealing in serious issues.

You might want to consider the performance of Minime in this regard. Here we are, at the start of the 21st century and this fellow is hung up on monkey virgins, has nothing of his own to communicate, except snippy little observations, and yet he assures himself that he is the direct heir to one of the most refined civilizations ever known. If true, his ancestors must have been the clowns then that their descendant is today.
