....there is resistance to change and almost always it seems the backward, the brutal, resists the more humane. So easy to be cynical to say that "there is no such thing as progress" and yet who really wants to live at any other time than now? Nostalgia only sees the soft, fuzzy, edges of things. The 50s were brutal...maybe there was less rushing around and things were "simpler"....but there were young Black men hanging from trees and women could be locked away by their husbands if they neglected their "wifely duties", and we'd just finished an era of two world wars. We progress, but we pay a price...and maybe it's those same conservatives who find their world shifting around them who make us pay the price...maybe as they see their power slipping away they infect the coming age as their parting shot as they go down to defeat. Conservative forces just won't give up...they've lost, but as long as there is damage to be done, they keep at it. Will financial institutions really have it their way, as if nothing happened? I think not...but for several more years they will try to cheat and steal as they have done...but eventually they'll be reined in...we know we are damaging the earth we live on...we know climate change is real...we know the consequences will be severe, even staunch Conservatives know that..but as long as they can hire actors to play scientists and tell us "we need more data", they will keep at it, if for no other reason than for spite...because Gay people can marry, if nothing else. It's like sourdough starter: you have to keep a little of the old batch to mix in with the new, so the old bacteria can infect the new dough...a strain of destructive behavior and values is carried over and mixed in with new ideas, new ways....I'm babbling. --------------------- |
