...the decision to attack Iraq is having its blow-back again in this election....it helped undermine Clinton when she ran against Obama and it's back as Trump uses it to malign her....a sort of Karma, I suppose. But what recourse does any politician have in a democracy when the people demand they be "protected"? We all know that any politician who stood against Bush's war would have lost any chance of advancing a career. A functioning democracy depends on the literacy and education of the people, else it's just a mob rushing from one jerky position to another. People are, again, demanding they be protected....and insisting that someone protect them....and they're making the same mistake they made before...you can't win someone else's civil war for them, especially not when you are the one who set it in motion. There is no great mystery to defeating Isis, or Al Qaeda....that isn't the problem or the solution....these are gangs of people who can operate in the mess we created an there will always be other gangs....and what happens the day after you defeat Isis? Who will rule? Who can hope to clam the waters over there? Will it be someone WE support, or back...because if it is, the whole thing starts over again. One of the greatest tragedies in our history was when Bill Clinton changed a settled policy of not allowing one moghul to own all three media branches in any one market....gutting that law meant a Fox News could buy up newspapers and radio and teevee stations in ONE area...and then control the "news" and surround us with amounts to corporate advertising, including ads for war and "defense". The American has become so terrified with scare tactics that we are willing to blindly go where the Pentagon and Boeing want us to go...and they all profit by war, war against weaker people of course....no news outlet will tell us the simple truth because these truths will cut into profits....yes, it's that simple. We created what we now fear...and it looks like we're going to continue on this profitable path....Trump and Clinton want even more military spending....which means more cuts in other services citizens actually need....ah, well. We are there making new enemies, and that won't stop until we get out of there. --------------------- |
