...saw a documentary narrated by Kenneth Brannagh who read excerpts from Goebbells' diary...covering a period from the early 20s to the end in 1945. He was not a stupid man...just a man believing stupid things. In one section he says what the Nazis have to do is replace Christianity with a religion of Nazism...the basic mechanisms will remain in place, just Jesus will be replaced by Hitler. That's pretty telling and gives the lie to those who insist Hiterlism was atheistic. Hitchens points out the same thing about Stalin; that for centuries the Russians had been taught to believe in a god so all Stalin did was become their god....there has never been a government run on actual rational beliefs....all of them have relied on some sort of fairy-magic to bamboozle their followers with. What really struck was the positive way Goebbels discussed propaganda...that it was a good thing and a necessity for running a government. It was only in the last weeks, when Germans could see for themselves that their world was going up in smoke that Goebbels wrote the people would not tolerate any longer being lied to....admitting that propaganda was lies, deliberate, designer lies...a false version of an actual reality intended to fool people into marching in a chosen direction...else why did he admit at the end that it was all lies? Now, it seemed, with the plain truth incontrovertibly before everyone's eyes, they might as well tell the truth...because EVIDENCE is stronger than "faith". Early Fascism was, like any early version of anything, crude, noisy, inefficient and easy to spot because it left a wide trail..of lies and corpses. Today we don't brag about the power or desirability of propaganda...in fact we make a great show of disdaining its use...but that's only so we get everyone focused on the earliest forms of propaganda...like Fascist facial hair and funny marches and loud yelling...making them believe that so long as our leaders don't have Chaplin mustachios or raise fists or wear military uniforms, we must not be living in Fascism. Which is really another great feat of, yes...Fascism! --------------------- |
