Lion of Babel destroyed in Basra (Extra) Jul 29, 2007, 11:23 GMT Baghdad - The independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) reported on Sunday the destruction of a statue of the Lion of Babel erected in a square in central Basra since the 1920. Witness reports cited by VOI said 'a load of explosives was placed underneath the statue and when it detonated at dawn it led to the almost complete destruction of the statue.' The Basra statue of the lion, a symbol of the Babylonian ancient civilization, is a replica of the original statue in Babel. --------------------- |
