I can't say I'm disappointed or surprised, except that Obama has been forced to reveal himself much sooner than most waiting presidents. He said that his choice of Rev Warren was consistent with his campaign to "bring America together over social issues". Discrimination, especially when it becomes written into constitutional law is NOT a "social issue"...it is a legal issue first and foremost. How you treat a bank robber or murderer is not a social issue...it is a legal issue primarily that has social implications. If we were talking about the right to snub your neighbors or discriminate among your friends...to not invite Asians or Catholics to your birthday party, that would be a social issue...but when you decide, or proclaim, that Gay people cannot enjoy the full legal right to marry, just like everyone else, you're deciding a LEGAL issue, not a social one. Rev Warren is one who would deny equality under the law to Gay people...plain and simple. We don't care what he thinks of alternatives, of civil unions...we don't care that HE thinks that's good enough...THAT is a "social issue" and he can think any way people in a society can. But what he advocates is denying legal rights to equality for ALL people...and that's plain wrong and unconstitutional...no matter what a half Black White lawyer from Illinois thinks. We allowed ourselves to be emotionally overwhelmed by the IDEA of electing a Black man..or a woman. We be.ieve that this unprecedented and historic move would transfer into historic events and great gains...we were just as emotionally swayed as when we voted for Bush and praised him for the "security" and "strength" he was supposed to bring us. In each case, Bush and Obama, if we'd used our heads we'd have seen that an elected official is not, can not and will not the answer to vastly complex issues which only get more muddled and tangled the longer we day-dream and wish things would get better. Inviting Warren is a huge step backwards...but luckily for us the Constitution will protect us from our bases instincts, both laziness and wooley-headedness. Thank god the Constitution is not a "social" document. --------------------- |
