Of Legends, Beggars And Things

I’m going to quote less and paraphrase instead…anyone who wishes to challenge me as to what the actual words are, or mean, which Dr Joseph uses, as well as sources, can buy the book, as we did read it, as I am. If they can show that I an in error…and I mean significantly so, not in a Maggie-type error, or Xenophon-style error…Jeff will refund them the price of Dr Joseph’s book…which is a bit on the steep side…but let no one assume, although they all will, that Dr Jacobs receives the overwhelming bulk of the price, or anything close…the sad truth is that this book is on a slightly esoteric subject not well known to most people so that the publisher can expect few sales…and when you consider how many modern Assyrians are proud to have never read a page of it, you can appreciate the difficulty all the way around.

Continuing on the thread that people have, even since classical times, mistakenly referred to the people ON the land as the same as those UNDER it, Dr Joseph recounts that he has heard Persians in Kermansha begging on the streets and claiming they were “lineal descendants” of Imam Husayn…grandson of Muhammed…who lived over 1,300 years ago. Also that there are villagers of Aramean descent who, assimilated with Persians, claim to be of Royal Persian descent…”from Kisra, son of Qubadh.” And among us the story of Mar Oardagh, himself a seni-legendary figure traces his father’s ancestry to the family of Nimrud and his mother to the family of Sunkherib…a geneology that “harks back over a thousand years”.

This is fascinating stuff…especially when you re-consider the word “beggar” in the context of our “national” aspirations. What have we done more than beg more powerful people “richer” than ourselves, as they bustle past on important world-business, tugging at their sleeve and insinuating ourselves by claiming that we too are “lineally” descended, and directly and purely too, from kings and princes of Assyria…from Gilgamesh and Ashurbanipal, our grandparents and uncles.

We wail at the Kurds for understanding how nations are made…by theft and violence..and for getting it right, while we go on yowling about how it SHOULD be done,,,priding ourselves on “begging”, what other word is there for it, for “justice…as Maggie says with such vehemence…”we were here FIRST”…as any child might when claiming a swing at the park.

Who ever gave us the idea that “justice” matters? Who taught us that eventually, “the truth will out and ye shall be rewarded unto the heavens”…who, if not the church? And we, jackasses that we are, have transformed this “eternal hope” for something after we die, into a plea to the ultimate justice of God/Bush/Blair into a “political agenda” which has begging, not of the Lord, but of the elected scoundrels who manage the corporate accounts known today as “governments” and who pass us by with an indulgent smile and a brush of the hand.

What office or desk is there that is authorized to settle such claims as “We Were Here First!!!”…whose officers will review our letters and Xenophon and “all the rest”, deciding ultimately that our claim is valid…and evict the Kurds…or anyone else from anywhere?

Are we daft? Or are we just raised to nationalism and politics the way we were to the church…where begging, on your knees yet, is a sign of greatness…taking the same method of “getting something”, even a miracle of a something…out to the streets and alleys and parliaments of the world where we beg for justice and a nation as if they were spare change in a passing strangers pockets.
