Of Books And Beliefs It begins to look like Dr Joseph’s book, other than shedding light on how modern Assyrians came into existence has also sparked interest on an expanded theme, which still includes and indeed came out of the subject matter in his book…and that has to do with books, all books and the ideas contained therein and the attitude we have towards them. What makes the Bible and the salesforce pushing it so damned obnoxious to the human mind, heart and soul is precisely the idea that you must believe what it says about itself because it says these things ABOUT itself..which sounds very like Maggie’s and Don’s convinction that they “know what they know" because they "know it”…you can hear a religious huckster, all the way up to the pope telling you the same thing about his book..that you must believe what it says there because it says it….you must believe what is in the bible because you must believe what is in the bible…and with no further chance to discuss the matter unless you want your legs broken. You might as well take the word of a brochure put out by Chevrolet that you must buy a car from them because, as it says so in the book about Chervrolets put out to SELL their cars, where it ios written that, verily, this is the best and only car and that if you buy a Toyota and we can’t break your legs for it, you can still go to hell! Maggie, more than Don, was raised with this same belief in holy books…maybe not the bible but certainly her own book, yet festering in her mmind, which writes down the truth…and she believes it and wants to prosletyze, or damn, the rest of who will not believe…and she certainly has the same fury any Christian Evangelical would feel towards the Koran as she does for the “heretical” book by Dr Joseph, which, she believes, seeks to “attack her truths”, as contained in that book-yet-to-be-written but which is to her every bit a holy book to be bought and swallowed whole and without question as the Bible or Koran is...or, and this is the key..as she assumes therefore Dr Joseph`s is, without thought, discussion or heretical objections. Its this, almost`, “delight” in being irrational, of buying a Chevrolet for no better reason than because General Motors said it was the best car around…and holding on to that car even MORE, the more parts fall off of it..for who is willing to admit, with only half a car left in the driveway, that they fell for an obvious and most shady scam? Maggie drives a Chevrolet. --------------------- |
