There was a touching story about the "Global Medical Relief Fund", specifically, about a young Iraqi boy who lost an eye, arm, and a leg when he kicked a bottle (he and his friends were kicking a bottle down the street) and it exploded. The woman that started the charity seems very genuine, caring, loving, and she runs it herself out of her home. She's helped over 100 children from around the world giving them free medical treatment, and she truly sees them as her own children. At one point during the interview, she mentioned that she has received hate mail from people who say that she should focus on helping children here in the U.S. of A. The interviewer asked, "you really get hate mail? How do you respond to such mail?" and she said "we don't have land mines here". Her heart is in the right place, but I couldn't help but to be saddened by the hundreds, or more accurately, the thousands or even tens of thousands of Iraqi children, and other children around the world, who have been and continue to be hurt, maimed, and even murdered, by wars fought in the name of the United States of America, my country, for nothing but cheap oil and weapons sales. It was a very heartwarming and also sad segment, which left me with a feeling of malaise. You can watch the segment here: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/03/25/60minutes/main20046854.shtml What can we do? Of course, you can write a letter to your congressman or senator, who is bought and paid for, and in response you will get a form letter. It's kind of funny, actually. I've written several letters, and sometimes the form letter response that I get has nothing to do with any of the points that I raised in my original correspondence. I believe the problem can only be resolved through putting my money where my mouth is. I go out of my way to support local businesses that aren't owned by war-mongering multi-nationals. I'm not sure if there is anything else that can be done to stop the war machine. (On the subject of Multi-Nationals, 60 minutes did a segment on tax havens tonight which was very interesting: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/03/25/60minutes/main20046867.shtml) --------------------- |
