...we are a nation of laws, not customs or traditions...those customs and traditions we value most have been elevated to the status of laws...they are no longer "what people prefer", but the law of the land...obeying them is mandatory, not optional.

...we have never had a law stating that marriage can only be between a man and a woman...it has merely been a tradition, a custom...but we HAVE laws already outlawing polygamy and child-marriage. There is no law mandating straight marriage because no one ever thought about Gay people and their rights...not for 2000 plus years. But in all that time we evolved into a nation which now makes it against the law to discriminate against Americans...for whatever reason. That IS the law.

...anti-Gay people are TRYING to add this law to our books; that marriage can only be legal between a man and a woman...so far there has been no such law, custom, yes, long-held tradition, yes...but no law.

For the first time our society is being faced with this question...and our best legal institutions say there can be no basis for outlawing marriage among some Americans while making it legal only for some others....

We are not a nation of chickens, who are afraid of making laws because of what MIGHT happen. We already know that discrimination is a bad thing...our recent history has taught us this...and so we've liberated Blacks, minorities and women...all that's left is to liberate and protect the rights of Gay people...and we'll do it.

The Church has every good reason to oppose this because they know what's coming...they know that their right to tax-exemption will be challenged when they refuse to abide by the law of the land based on their beliefs...their beliefs do NOT entitle them to OUR TAX DOLLARS!
