Dear Chhun Sun,

I recently read your recent article about Dona Latifi located at the following location:
http://www.turlockjournal.com/main.asp?SectionID=20&SubSectionID=7&ArticleID=3238&TM=48134.53

Although you attempted to give a positive edge to the story a couple of Oriental remarks come glaring through your work.

1. "And it's because she's not afraid to ask for help, despite growing up with different customs."

This is such a subjective statement making the assumption that women in Iran are forbidden to even speak. You continue to perpetuate the Western myth that all Middle Easterners treat their women poorly as opposed to the West where they have freedom and human rights and are never exploited.

2. This summarizes Dona Latifi, this month's Student Spotlight winner who's determined to one day work on other people's teeth as a dentist and attend a big-time university like Yale or Harvard - perhaps things she couldn't do back in her homeland of Iran.

Another subjective statement immersed in Oriental myth. Iran which has one of the most highly educated populations in the Middle East with access to both genders. In fact according to the Persian Times "In the last five years alone, Iranian women have made up more than 60 percent of university entrants."

And while I usually ignore such subtle Oriental sentences unconciously slipped into articles such as yours I feel it important that authors - especially of Eastern descent - are made aware of the fact that such Oriental statements are perpetuated by the corporate controlled media to conquer the East culturaly at first and then as is the case of Iraq militarily.

I would appreciate it if you could make amends to these two sentences in your otherwise great article.

Regards,
David Chibo
