I have no bone to pick with anyone claiming to be Assyrian…except as a practical matter when people act on the belief to try to wrestle political concessions. Aside from that, they have my blessings.

But, when people try to prove they are, then I feel compelled to enter the fray, especially when they mangle history to do so…and not only in order to prove what can never be proven, but to slander Islam as they do by providing an incomplete account of its confrontation with Christianity. Again it’s for the same reason; to diffuse a situation in which we’re no match for the forces we antagonize by our garbled and prejudicial account of Islam’s beliefs and actions.

It’s much like taking Christ on faith. When the Scholastics attempted to use Logic and Philosophy to prove the existence of god, they tied themselves and everyone else in knots. Kant finally untied us a little by reaffirming that reason could never determine such things…that Faith alone was required and all that was needed. I agree. It’s futile to prove or disprove God….but if people, Augustine for instance try, then have at them. To argue with Augustine isn’t to tackle god, but Augustine.

The Assyrian identity is the same. It should be left to faith. I’m intrigued by the writings of Dr Joseph because they turn logic and reason on this subject…as I find Voltaire’s writings on Christianity fascinating…neither says either is bunk. They merely shine a light of reason, by their lights, on it. If doubts are raised, well, that’s the risk when you think.

Warda’s article is a statement of faith…but he also brings history and logic and reason into it…apparently he felt the need to justify his faith…give logical reasons for what he believes. That, I think is a mistake and it’s what opens him up to counter-argument. It’s unfortunate that one becomes an enemy in for thinking...did our people never leave the Dark Ages?
