I called in to a local radio show two days ago - they were talking about Afghanistan and the recent news story about a US soldier who killed several civilians. I told him that it was kind of sad how many of the previous callers didn't even know the difference between Iraq and Afghanistan. I then lamented how collectively, we Americans don't know our history, and began to recite: - The CIA put Saddam Hussein into power (this is a fact, not a conspiracy theory) - The CIA funded Osama Bin Laden when the Russians were in Afghanistan (again, a fact) - That the majority of the hijackers were Saudis, not Afghans And finally, I concluded by saying that we should have never gone into Iraq, or Afghanistan, and that the end result was just untold numbers of civilian death, lives ruined, countries ruined, and of course US Soldier suicides and deaths. What does the talk show host say in response? Well, he talks for a few minutes about how "these countries" (Iraq and Afghanistan) are difficult to govern because of competing interests, tribes, etc. That's such an annoying response. Yes, just blame their culture. Don't blame the fact that we blew up the country, bombed them to smitherines. Fuck. I shouldn't waste my time in the future trying to reason with people. ______________ pancho wrote: >....it will more than likely be worse...but it's an election year and Obama can't look "weak" on terrorism....so several more American soldiers are going to die and be maimed for nothing...absolutely nothing. > >Is this any way to treat heroes? --------------------- |
