The night before last I took a girl I knew to see the film, "The Black Power Mixtapes 1967-1976", which was a series of clips shot by Swedish journalists of Stokely Carmichael, Angela Davis, Bobby Seale, Huwey P. Newton, a young Farrakhan, and others in the "Movement". As it portrayed the progression of the different groups and their programs, such as the "Free Breakfast Programs" set up by the Panthers, study groups, community policing, etc., it also showed how quickly it all got shot down, burned down, blown-up, and burnt out, due to the covert policies of FBI and CIA in collusion with state and local police. It was really sad. When I was up in Oakland, I met three individuals who were around my mother's age (about 64 or so) who invited me over to their little shack. They were hardcore addicts, smoking rock while a syringe was dangling from one of their "good" veins. They took me in 'cause they knew I was a Middle-Easterner and wanted to talk to me about Islam. I immediately told them I know nothing about Islam, but they still wanted me to stay. Their stories of the glory of the late 60s when the Panthers rose and pushed back against the racist cops were quite inspiring. But when the 70s rolled on, and smack became the "in thing", many in the Party fell to the wayside, just like my three hosts, who no matter how poor and strung-out they were, their hospitality still touches my heart. So after the film, I start telling my so-called date about this story of the "Oakland Three", and she, who works six days a week, tried to be reasonablely sympathetic, but in reality, she was thinking about going to sleep, waking up, going to work, paying her bills, and on and on.. I can't blame her for wanting to have a roof over her head. With a schedule like that who's got time for "reading and study programs" as my former Panther friend tells me. Reading and study programs? That's what they don't want happening. They'd rather have the busy bee come home and vicariously live through some shallow celebrity's lifestyle, than to get together with like-minded people and read and discuss subject matters pertaining to the struggle of all working and poor people. By the way, my date ended without a kiss. Maybe I missed the opportunity for the kiss 'cause I was so passionately talking about the film, and how things have only changed for the worse, like Black entertainment sinking down to the lowest common denominator. A kiss don't change a thing when everyone around you is getting fucked! --------------------- |
