Fortunately, I've never been mistreated by the police: I'm guessing that being the light skinned among the dark skinned kids had something to do with it, and having a book on my persons usually helped, since I remember numerous times being given advice by the cops about "what is a smart kid like you doing with a bunch of no-goods"? I recall clearly how the process began in school with teachers who designated who the problem students were (usually, always Black and Brown kids from broken homes, and poor Whites, too)- and thus began the "jackets" or records of potential future criminals. I knew kids who had gotten busted as teens and did time in Youth Authority (YA), and that alone was enough to stigmitize them for the rest of their lives, trapping them in the "revolving door syndrome". Almost all of the guys I knew from school dropped out and graduated from YA to the penitentiary. Now, as adults they've all become born-again Christians and refuse to beleive that the system is flawed, instead their reasoning is that "it was god's plan". As I see it, the more criminals, the more profits for the private prisons and the inflated prison industrial complex. --------------------- |
