One of the reasons drugs got into the Black community was the Mafia. When the Italian-American mob (La Cosa Nostra) under the leadership of Charles "Lucky" Luciano, got into the narcotics business with the Corsican Brothers (The French Connection), one of the dumping grounds for the dope was Havana, Cuba (under Batista, of course), and the other was Harlem, which was under the gun of Jewish mobster, Dutch Schultz. That's when most Black Jazz musicians and performers, like Charlie "Bird" Parker, Lester Young, Bud Powell, and later, Johh Coltrane and Miles Davis, got into the smack. The same thing is true with crack and the Contras, who were supplied by the CIA, and their point man was a Nicaraguan named Danilo Blandon, who hooked up with L.A.'s "Freeway" Ricky Ross, who in turn, supplied the L.A. gangs with the drug, and these gangs supplied other cities like Atlanta, because of Atlanta's freeway grid, they were able to hit cities up the east coast and the mid-west. Each time the Black communities began to spring out of the despertate poverty in which they were trapped, like in Harlem with the "Harlem Renaissance", which blew up with great writers, artists and musicians, the drugs hit the neighborhood and destroyed what hope there was brewing there. In the 70s, the heroin, once again destroyed the momentum and the great leaps the Civil Rights organizations and the Black Power movement had taken, against the iron fist of racist "law and order" under Nixon, and before him. By the time the community leaders came up from the deep muddy waters of addiction and crime to take a breath and a look to what had taken shape around them, the 80s came along with the "Reagan Revolution" destroying the unions, to which many Blacks belonged, and public programs, which helped many Black and Brown families. With the depressed atmosphere of the times, the only philosophy which the Black youth practiced was that of Nihilism, along with the great white hope of crack cocaine and the AK-47. One of the reasons so many Black children are fatherless are because the welfare system was set in such a way that if a family lived together: father, mother and children, they get no aid. So, most Black fathers simply left their family homes since they were unemployed because all the good jobs at factories where they formally worked got shut down or moved away. So the Black man made himself homeless, so that his wife and children could have a roof over their heads. This goes back to the begining of the African experience on this continent, when the slave owners used to break up the African families, and humiliate the African male in front of his wife and children by beating him -- sometimes to death, and cutting off his penis and choking him with it. Most Black men from the age of 16 to 60 are either incarcerated, on parole or on probation. Many of them have convicitons for drug possesions. Until recently, possession of crack cocaine was considered a felony; whereas the same amount of powder cocaine,a misdemeanor. Crack cocaine is powder cocaine cooked with a few spinkles of baking soda and water. But powder cocaine is assossiated with wealthy Whites (lawyers, doctors, entertainers, etc.), while crack cocaine is a "Black thing". Most Black men with a conviction on their records are barred from voting. Those with misdameanors find it harder these days to be able to vote. If you kick a dog and deprive it food and comfort for a long time... don't expect that dog to be your best friend. --------------------- |
