I think we all go through experiencing that feeling of not fitting in. My grandmother (who was born here) told me about how her mother used to go out of her way to practice perfect English, to go to Catholic church rather than Chaldean church, and everybody that met her thought she was just another American (and this was a compliment in her eyes). I guess it didn't hurt that she had fair skin. On the other hand, her husband (my great-grandfather), I'm told, became enraged one day when at the dinner table my great grand-mother was having a conversation with her children (my grandmother and her siblings) in English, because she wanted to practice English. He screamed, (in Surath, of course), "you should be speaking the language of your parents and grandparents"! Also, interestingly, my grandmother told me that back then they didn't have many of the necessary ingredients to make our food. Now, it's easy to go to "Babylon Ethnic Foods" (the Chaldean grocery store) or a Lebanese grocery store to get Syrian bread, samoon, and every spice, torshi, 'amba, you can imagine. Back then, they ate white bread. I'm talking about that disgusting, chewy, white Wonder bread. 'oumah! Can you imagine? It must have been difficult to be "ethnic" back then.... I have also read, many times over the years and from several sources, that Iraqi Jews were terrorized by Zionists that wanted to encourage them to leave and flee to Israel. Having said that, life wasn't 100% perfectly rosy for them in Iraq, either. I recently read an interesting book, edited by Dr. John Joseph, called "Living in Romantic Baghdad: an American Memoir of Teaching and Travel in Iraq, 1924-1947", where the author describes how Nazi Germans came to infect Iraqis with anti-Jewish rhetoric, and how some Jews were in fact attacked in Iraq (not related to the Zionist attacks/bombings of Jewish areas) during this time. But realistically, they did live in peace and security just like the Chaldeans and Assyrians, for thousands of years, in Iraq and Jews fared far better overall in Iraq than they did when in majority Christian countries. ____________________ Marcello wrote: >Thank you, Jeffrey. The Mizrahi are the majority in Israel (I could be wrong) and they suffered many indignities from their white European Ashkanazi coreligionists. In the '50s, according to Lenni Brenner, the Zionist leadership in Israel made deals with Arab nations regarding their Jewish communities. Israel needed (as it still does) as many Jews as possible to outnumber the indigenous Arabs of Palestine, and many Jews from Arab countries did go to Palestine---but these were the poor Jews, the wealthy Jews of Iraq did not want to leave their place of birth, where their ancestors had lived since the time of fall of Babylon; so, some (like Bremmer) assert that either Mossad or elements within Iraqi intelligence in cahoots with the Israelis planted numerous bombs in public places in Jewish neighborhoods, scaring the poor residents to flurry to Palestine. Once in Palestine, they were treated as refugees; even worse, they were sprayed with DDT, the same insecticide with which Nazi guards showered Jewish and other inmates at concentration camps. Then there was the question of where to house these newcomers? Well, Israel's existence and expansion would be non-existent without the Kibbutz model, a Zionist/Socialist program of settling and collectivizing land, where there was equality among all; men and women were equal. Another aspect of the Kibbutz is that like most socialist models, children were separated from the parents and lived in BEIT YELADIM (Our Children's Home). A problem arose with the arrival of the Mizrahi, mostly from Iraq and mainly poor. The white, European socialist/Zionists did not want their children to live with Arab Jews. So, they built a separate Beit Yeladim for the Mizrahi. Now, one can only imagine the low self-esteem the Mizrahi kids must have felt... how much they wished to be a white Ashkhanazi, or to be treated with respect and not disdain. I have and had Israeli friends who are from mix Mizrahi/Ashkhanazi parents (usually the man is white and the woman is Mizrahi), and each and every one of my friends would go out of their way to emphasize that they are indeed "EUROPEAN". If you watched any of Max Blumenthal's work he did in Israel, you'd notice that the most racist of Israelis who chase down and beat up Arabs---who look like themselves---are the Mizrahi, as if to show their Ashkhanazi friends that they hate Arabs even MORE than they do... in short, they hate themselves. When I was younger, having been raised on Hollywood movies where all or most of the heroes are white, blond and blue-eyed, I used to tell my mom that I wish I was blonde and blue-eyed...that was until I saw the film SHAFT, with Richard Roundtree as the Black hero, or when I saw ENTER THE DRAGON, where the hero was an Asian: Bruce LEE. I was 8-years-old, and since then, I love my brown eyes, my black hair and my "dark ways," as one former girlfriend used to tell me. --------------------- |
