Khomeini was a great opportuninst. When the students (who were mostly Marxists) took over the US embassy, because as political activists and students of history they knew that Kermit Roosvelt regrouped at the embassy when his first attempt at a coup failed in '53, and that embassies are generally a "nest of spies", the Ayatollah went on the air to support their act, and in days his followers interpreted his support as a fatwa, even though it was after the fact. He did the same thing when a 15 year old Iranian kid strapped explosives on himself and ran toward an Iraqi tank, blowing up himself and the tank. When word reached Khomeini, he decided to use the story of Imam Hussein, who along with 72 male followers, went to Karbala, and there he and his followers were mutilated by the Caliph's army. That's when the keys to paradise were hung around the necks of 11, 12, 13 year-olds, who were blown up by mines, or blew-up themselves under Iraqi tanks. In his last year of life, Khomeini and his posse managed to kill as many Marxists and Leftists they could. The Revolution, as I remember it, was fought on the streets by militant Marxists. While the Islamic students were in the city of Qom praying in their mosques, secular-Leftists in Tehran were fighting a "Che"-influenced, urban guerilla war against the Shah's armed forces. The Marxists fought and died for the Revolution, the Mullahs simply stole it and maintained it through extreme repression.
