There's an excellent old book by the secular existentialist, Eric Fromm, titled Escape From Freedom, in which he argues that humans are challenged with the burden of freedom, or free will, and bearing that great responsibiltiy of having to choose for onself at every given moment - and dealing with the unforseeable consequences of each choice - sways individuals toward authoritarianism, (in the case he was making, fascism)... or in this case, religion or god: Therfore, humans are always looking for an "escape from freedom". I read it 20 years ago, but I think that was the gist of it. --------------------- |
