This is a bit off topic: In Iran most modern homes have two different types of bathrooms, one is the traditional, which one squats over; the other, is the typical toilet seat we all use, which the Persians call "toilet faranghi" or foreign toilet. There's a book (can't remember the title) which illustrates the birth of the "faranghi" toilet. Basically, when the feudal system began to crumble, the aristocracy welded themselves in their huge castles, and to beat boredom, focused on etiquette, like table manners, which fork to use, in which hand, and so on. One of the things they were quite serious about was the way in which "gentlemen and lords" relieved themselves. They argued that animals and primitives squat, but gentlemen sit, and thus the modern toilet was born. Spanish filmmaker, Luis Bunuel, did a parody of this in his film "The Phantom of Liberty", in a scene where the aristocracy is sitting around a dinner table, but instead of chairs, they are sitting on toilet seats, and instead of dishes, they're passing political magazines to one another while relieving themselves.
