I read the same thing about the Christian Pakistani woman you had allegedly said something negative about Islam. My interpretation is that she's living among (and is of a ) lower class. And there are allegations that some of her neighbors have acted maliciously by spreading gossip that she may have "blasphemed" the Quran. Another case is that of a Palestenian in the West Bank who's been detained for similar reasons for (once again) having made "blasphemous statements" about Islam through his website. This is causing quite a surprise in the West Bank, and especially, Israel, since the West Bank is suppsedly secular and liberal, unlike the Gaza. The woman I think to whom you're referring is Sakineh Ashtiani, an Iranian from the Turkic region of Tabriz. Initially, she was to be stoned to death for having an alleged lover. But the world first learned about her when the Iranian Judiciary was to stone her to death for allegedly having committed "adultary". Once the world began to express their displeasure and concern for her, the court charged her on her former charge of being an alleged "accessory" to her former husbands murder. Now, there's been stories of her oldest son (and her lawyer and his family) having been arrested. The Jewish French Philosopher, Bernard Henri Levy has made it his crusade to save Sakineh, her family and lawyer and his family's lives. And to draw attention to the rampid Human Rights abuses in Iran. This is the same Bernard Levy, who according to Haaretz's poignant, op-ed writer, journalist/activist, Gideon Levi, was "prasing the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) for maintaining their stature of being the most "moral army" in the world during OPERATION CAST LEAD, when Israel "disporportionately" attacked and killed somewhere around 1,300 Palestinians, many of whom were civilians, mostly women and children. --------------------- |
