My grandmother told me stories of how she would take the kids to visit him in jail." -- I wonder if your grandfather was imprisoned after '58 when Qassim was assassinated and Communinst Party members and even the left wing of the Baath were either murdered or incarcerated. I had only one communist family member who was openly gay (this was in Iran in the 70s). He was a painter and a playwright named Banny, and he got arrested when I was about 7 or 8 years old because he had painted a nude self portrait of himself and instead of signing his name on the bottom of the canvas he had pasted his pubic hair. He was quite a character. He was always dressed in black with a cape and a beret. I'm not sure if he was in the Party but I was told he was communist because he read a lot of books and was in and out of jail. --------------------- |
