"That said I believe that the decades long resurgence of evangelical Christianity is more than likely its death throes, not really a great surge forward...but still, even after Voltaire stomped all over God the old bastard hung on and came roaring back to murder and stunt and thwart...so maybe Hitchens was determined to drive a final nail in his coffin, and that's always a good thing. ...in any case I found his views refreshing, his ability to express them with wit and a knife's edge exceptional....plus it was nice to find someone taking the fight out from behind closed doors and cloisters and onto teevee, of all places where it was most necessary." - Agreed. I also am not an expert on Hitch. I did find myself a bit of a fan in the early 90s when it was a MUST to read his weekly op-ed in The Nation (in which the author, Alexander Cockburn, was also a contributor). My two criticisms of him are (were) his shift to the right, and the "bad-mouthing" of his former comrades (especially Edward Said when he was dead and couldn't defend himself from "Paradise" where he was busy bangin' 72 virgins). Having said that, he was definitely an intellectual asset, and since I found out about his illness, I hoped (since I don't pray) that he would have recovered back to good health. Rest in Peace, Hitch. If there is a god, I'd love to hear the debate between the two adversaries. As Woody Allen says: “To you I'm an atheist; to God, I'm the Loyal Opposition.” --------------------- |
