I agree, the root causes and historical reasons are either minimized or ignored when they don't favor the accepted narrative and exploited when they do. So when John Stewart brings up the U.S. backed coup in Iran in '53, he minimizes a major historical event by mentioning it in a light, funny way as if to say "OOPS! We're so clumsy... ha ha ha"; or right-wing radio's attempt to use comedy to joke about black people complaining too much for having their grandmothers raped and their grandfathers castrated and lynched. Parenti talks about this when pointing out the perception how "stupid" Reagan and Bush are... how "clumsy", while they manage to chip away at the social safety net, privatize wars and make endless enemies to hatch permanent wars. There's nothing light or stupid about over-throwing democratically-elected governments or centuries of slavery and racism. As far as the LAPD's history of racism against L.A.'s black community, this is just one cop's view of our city's other residents: "Yeah we work with niggers and gangs. You can take one of these niggers, drag 'em into the alley and beat the shit out of them and kick them. You can see them twitch. It really relieves your tension." He went on to say "we had them begging that they'd never be gang members again, begging us." He said that he would tell them, "You do what you're told, understand, nigger?" -- Mark Fuhrman, LAPD http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Fuhrman --------------------- |
