His father, Reza Khan, was an illiterate soldier who was funded, designed and named, Reza "Shah", by the same British interests who gave us the title, "Assyrian", for the same reasons: to have a foothold in the Middle East and to exploit the potential wealth in resources of the region. This is how the Anglo-Iranian Oil, now known as the infamous BP (British Petrolium) came into being. Reza Shah emulated Ataturk, and just like the Turkish leader who modernized his country, Reza Shah banned the hijab, and as you mentioned, Jumah prayer. He also emulated and praised Adolf Hitler during the '30's, for Iranians are extremely proud of being Aryan (Iran means the land of the Aryans). This is when the Allied powers pushed him into exile and propped up his 22 year-old son, the Swiss-educated, young, malleable puppet, Reza Pahlavi, putting him in charge of vast amounts of petrol money -- to buy up endless arms from the gun pushers -- and act as their gendarme and the new "Shah" of Iran. In Kuzistan, the diputed Arab/Iranian region, at the cafes were the Brits would have their "tea at 3", there were signs written in bold, black letters: "NO DOGS, NO PERSIANS!". Later, in the '60's, Western diplomats/soldiers/spies could literally get away with murder without prosecution if the victim was Iranian. This is what furiated Khomeini and led him to publically attack the young Shah.. The result was Khomeini's exile to Iraq were the seeds of revolution were planted. I don't understand (I actually do) the reason why so many people like these right-wing, strongman types: they can't think for themselves. There's an exact pshychological description, a theory by Erich Fromm in his book about Fascism, "Escape from Freedom", where he argues that people are afaid of being free, because freedom means responsibility. So, it's easier to have someone else tell them what to do than it is for them to choose their own actions and face the repercussions. This "authoritarian character" is one who bends to authority and at the same time, despises authority. That's why we have Hitlers, and to a lesser degree, Shahs and Saddams. People are afraid to choose and act! --------------------- |
