Ali actually still respected Abu Bakr, Omar and Othman, Sunnis and Shiites did battle when Muwayia and Ali fought and the former killed the latter but the fighting was between them and the troops of both parties. They weren't out killing one another and civilians and animals or entire cities destroyed. I've never read about anything comparable to Christians wars where others had to hide in caves or basement because of other Christian groups. Shiites were still seen as Muslims under the various caliphs. There have certainly been battles between the two armies in the early centuries after the prophet Muhammad died and there have been bombings of Shiites mosques in places like Iraq but I don't know how much that can be traced back to the US with their divide and conquer strategies. As for Iran, I've noticed many of the pro Shah people don't even like Muslims at all so it's hard to even consider them Shiites when they don't like Islam. I've also noticed Shiites never use names of Omar, Othman, Abu Bakar, Ayesha etc and it's understandable because they see them as traitors who basically tried to steal something that belonged to Ali and his family. It's interesting that Iran was Sunni for many centuries and then became Shiites and actually had much success. Some of the greatest people in Islamic history have been Persians and their language became the second most popular in the Islamic world after Arabic. --------------------- |
