The Qurds also have - while fighting for self-determination - contributed to the art of cinema. The Qurdish filmmaker, Bahman Ghobadi, born in Irani-Qurdistan, is one of the most profound filmmakers (writer and director) of not only Qurdistan (or Iran) but world-wide. His first feature, "A Time for Drunken Horses" (2000) was the "first Kurdish film produced in Iran" and went on to win the Camera d'Or: one of the top prizes at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2002, his "Marooned in Iraq" achieved the Chicago International Film Festival's Gold Plaque. His third feature, "Turtles Can Fly", won many awards, including the Glass Bear and Peace Film Award at Berlin International Film Festival. His latest "No One Knows About Persian Cats" won two awards at Cannes in 2009, one of them being the Special Jury Prize. Now I personally don't care about awards (especially from Hollywood), but to win at Cannes and to continue to win at Cannes or the Berlin Film Festival is a clear indication of great talent. I saw "A Time for Drunken Horses" and was mezmorized by the inflicting pain and raw beauty with which Ghobadi paints his celluloid canvas. A truely incredible artist! --------------------- |
