- Initially, Hamas was enabled by the Israelis during the first Intifada in '87 with the goal of undermining the PLO and dividing the secular leftist Fatah. The blowback was Hamas, which based on your argument is not a mistake at all, since it performs the task of an "existential threat" and permanent war.
